Mantis World Game

A project by Superflux

Year: 2022

My responsibilities: 2D animation, graphic design, research, ideation and concept development

As part of an internship with Superflux, I aided the development of the game concept for Mantis World Game. Mantis World is a crisis simulation game in which gaming-volunteers choose strategies to prevent or survive crises. Players are rewarded for the completion of simulations with Mantis coins, a convertible in-game currency. In turn, the AI learns from the insight on player behaviour and choices, which it may apply in real-life scenarios.

Mantis World is part of Mantis Systems, a fictional development organisation created by Superflux to provoke and challenge development practitioners at the BOND annual conference and awards in Februrary 2018.

“Innovation leaders from three organisations BOND, UNDP and Nesta were concerned by a pervasive culture of short termism and risk aversion within the international development sector. Kathy Peach (Bond), Milica Begovic, Benjamin Kumpf, and Alexandru Oprunenco (UNDP) and Glen Mehn (NESTA) asked us to help them galvanise development practitioners into unconventional and longer term thinking. How could we help them imagine alternative ways of thinking about, and doing, development?” – Superflux
